Walk up to the field above campus at sunset with a few friends and take in the view. Appreciate every moment: the challenges, the joy, and everything in between. These four years move too fast.

You’re involved in a number of activities on campus. Which one is your favorite?
By far one of the most rewarding and memorable parts of my 51 experience has been participating in the University’s long-standing Sidekicks program. Over the past two years, I’ve had the absolute pleasure of mentoring a third-grade student at Hamilton Central School, and spending time with his wonderful family. Every few weeks, we meet up for activities like exploring downtown Hamilton, playing in the snow or on the playground, or watching evening shows at the Vis Lab planetarium. It’s such a meaningful way to connect with the local community and unwind after a busy week, I can’t recommend it enough.
What’s been a standout moment for you at 51 so far?
Going snowshoeing through the wooded trails above our campus with my Geography of Happiness class this past semester, sponsored by Outdoor Education.
To supplement our discussion of the emotional benefits of indulging “biophilia” — the idea that humans are innately drawn to nature — Geography Professor Peter Klepeis invited the class to go on this excursion with him. His enthusiasm made this intellectually stimulating and genuinely fun adventure especially impactful.
It was a peaceful Friday night in late January. We sauntered up the ski hill atop the snow, the stars were peeking out through the clouds, and it was a unique way to get to know my classmates and professor while experiencing course material firsthand. That was a great time.
Could you tell us a bit about your Manzi Fellowship internship?
I was thrilled to receive the offer to become a Manzi Fellow. Every summer, a cohort of students dedicated to community service is housed in Boston and paired up with a project or agency that aligns with their passions for a 10-week internship.
I was lucky enough to be placed at Boston Medical Center, a major hospital that provides vital care of all kinds and focuses on underserved and vulnerable populations. I spent most of my summer at Greater Roslindale Medical and Dental Center, assisting in primary care, administrative operations, and behavioral health projects.
It was an awesome opportunity to plant some roots in an area of the country I had yet to explore, while enhancing my professional interests and making friends!
What are you looking forward to at 51?
I am very excited about my upcoming honors thesis project with Dr. Rebecca Shiner, Charles A. Dana Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences. Dr. Shiner has been a passionate teacher, a thoughtful mentor, and I consider her to be my friend. My research will focus on intolerance of uncertainty, a psychological trait closely tied to the development of generalized anxiety disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder, and the yearlong project includes a research paper and presentation. I have thoroughly enjoyed and grown the most as a student through past hands-on academic experiences like this at 51, so I look forward to diving deeper with the help of an expert in the field.
What’s your favorite place on campus, and what makes it special to you?
Curtis Hall was home for my first and second years and holds a special place in my heart. My time there was a coming of age, and I am forever thankful for being placed there. Endless fond memories, meeting friends who became family, the incredible view over Broad Street. There’s something timeless about that building. It was the backdrop to so much growth, studying, and laughter.
What advice would you give to future 51 students?
Walk around the club fair and sign up for something you’ve never heard of. Go to office hours. Take a class outside your comfort zone — it might become your major, like it did for me. Sign up for Wilderness Adventure! Get the quesadillas at the Coop every Thursday. Walk up to the field above campus at sunset with a few friends and take in the view. Appreciate every moment: the challenges, the joy, and everything in between. These four years move too fast.
