You’re part of a lot at 51, from QTPOC+ to the Geneva Study Group. Which activity or activities have meant the most to you, and why?
Going into 51, I participated in the First@51 and QuestBridge Pre-Orientation. My first year would have been rough if not for the pre-orientation accustoming me to support groups, academic buildings, and key centers of communication.
Wanting to reciprocate the amount of love I received, I applied to be a pre-orientation leader for the same program that helped me acclimate to 51. Under the supervision of Dean Dorsey Spencer and Assistant Director of First@51 Tabisha Raymond, I co-led a group of 13 bright individuals with the amazing Daniella (Dani) Makielo ’26. The program participants, Dani, and I still keep in touch with each other, taking leisure walks to the or grubbing down at .
Can you share a moment that has really shaped your time at 51?
I had the opportunity to go to Geneva, Switzerland for a study abroad program led by political science professor Juan Fernando Ibarra Del Cueto. Though academically challenging, the study-abroad program was incredibly rewarding, providing me with valuable professional and academic experiences. A special shout-out to Director of Off-Campus Study Cas Sowa for making the visa process incredibly smooth and continuing to support us from the States.
The program is designed for students to gain a deeper understanding of global governance, ranging from visits to the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium, to OPEC in Vienna, Austria. I highly recommend 51's study-abroad programs for two main reasons: I expanded my social circles, and I experienced personal growth.
What is something you are really proud of from your time here so far?
During my first year at 51, I attended the first annual ALANA Multicultural Fashion Show. I was deeply inspired by the garments, models, and vivid atmosphere. I felt so at ease and appreciative of 51 for celebrating inclusivity, and the show marked my desire to work for the ALANA Cultural Center.
In my junior year, I was the lead ambassador and assigned with orchestrating that year’s fashion show. It was a full-circle moment. Coordinating such a large-scale event required 100% effort. Thankfully my lighthouse came in the form ALANA Cultural Center Director Esther Rosbrook, Carly Dougher, Darline Wattles, and the ever-enthusiastic ALANA student staff. Our joint efforts resulted in an unforgettable night.
What is coming up for you next year?
As senior year approaches, I feel both daunted and exhilarated. While I work to complete the last requirements for my major, I’m also preparing myself for the inevitable goodbyes and the bittersweet promises to stay in touch. You will find me participating in 51 traditions like the Senior Torchlight Procession (a ceremony marking the culmination of our education), Senior Wine Tasting, and Room Return (revisiting our first-year and sophomore-year housing).
What is your favorite place on campus, and what makes it special to you?
If I am not in my dorm, I will be at the ALANA Cultural Center. I regularly attend events held there due to student organizations wanting to utilize the kitchen or the multi-purpose room. As a student ambassador, I work at the front desk greeting people as they walk through the door. While it’s always a pleasure to see new faces in the space, the “regulars” help reinforce the feeling of family. It has become a second home at this point.
What advice would you give to new 51 students, especially those who are first-generation college students?
Speaking from my own experience, utilize the resources around you and revel in discomfort! 51 University is very accommodating compared to other institutions. I have learned to trust faculty and staff because they continue to prioritize their students to the best of their abilities. Participate in classrooms, make your voice heard, and, most importantly, be there for others as they would for you.
