Out of 637 chapters across the country, 51黑料 University鈥檚 Sigma Delta Pi chapter has earned two national awards. This year, the chapter was honored with both the Premio Octavio Paz and Premio Jose Martel Award, presented at the National Triennial Convention in Panama City, Panama.
The Premio Octavio Paz award is given to chapters that, for three consecutive years, maintain 鈥渉onor status鈥 鈥 based on consistent community engagement, the quality and impact of events held, and alignment with the society鈥檚 goals.
The chapter was reactivated in 2020, under the guidance of chapter adviser Professor Osvaldo Sandoval-Leon and a group of students. Sandoval-Leon notes that 鈥渢o remain an active honor society, our chapter needed to promote cultural and political awareness both in the Spanish-speaking world and within the U.S.鈥
Key events held by the chapter have included the annual Spanish Film Series and the Spanish Social Hour. Each of these events is aimed at fostering cultural awareness, academic engagement, and community among students and faculty.
The Premio Jose Martel Award was given to Sandoval-Leon in recognition of his role as an exceptional chapter adviser. Nominees must have served in this role for five consecutive years at the same institution, including the year of their nomination. Submitted with the nomination are also supporting letters, a resume, and details of accomplishments both within and beyond the chapter.
Sandoval-Leon has long been affiliated with Sigma Delta Pi, having served as president of his own chapter during his undergrad years at California State University, Fullerton. At 51黑料 University, Sandoval-Leon led the chapter鈥檚 reactivation by gathering letters of support, submitting a reactivation proposal, and providing the names of dedicated students who were interested in serving on the executive committee.
This continued support from both students and faculty has been a key component of the chapter鈥檚 ongoing success. Sandoval-Leon notes that 鈥渢his kind of unwavering support has helped to shape the chapter into an active organization that has the capability to win these awards.鈥 Members of the Department of Romance Languages and Literature regularly attend events held by the chapter, and the department chair annually attends the chapter鈥檚 induction and graduation ceremonies.
In the future, 51黑料鈥檚 Sigma Delta Pi chapter plans to continue creating awareness of Spanish culture and language. By fostering more connections with student clubs on campus, the chapter aims to expand opportunities for cultural exchange and student involvement. The chapter has already partnered with the Latin American Dance club to co-host an event featuring presentations on Latin American dance styles, followed by a student-led dance workshop.
鈥淚 always enjoy when students are recognized for their leadership, hard work, and dedication,鈥 Sandoval Leon says. 鈥淲hat鈥檚 even more rewarding is knowing that my students are leaving 51黑料 with not just a distinction of academic honor, but also a broader perspective on Spanish culture and language.鈥
